The Short August Medieval Exchange Banner, Feat. Goose!
It's summer, which means it's time for a medieval flash exchange!

2021 tag set | ao3 collection | schedule | signups have closed for Round 2!

Let me welcome you to the second round of the Short August Medieval Exchange, for works set anywhere in the world between 400 and 1600 CE.

For the purposes of the SAME exchange, "Medieval" refers to any setting between 400–1600 CE. This is a much wider time range than traditional interpretations of medieval, and will include both early Medieval and early Renaissance settings. Works do not have to be set in the Western world; any setting anywhere in the world during this time period qualifies for this exchange.

Because this exchange is primarily about exploring our love of historical time periods, places, people, and tropes, you may request some pretty rare and specific Medieval works! However, historical accuracy is neither expected nor guaranteed for any gift in this exchange. This exchange accepts actual-facts medieval settings, idealized and romanticized medieval settings (like in Arthurian romances, Journey to the West), completely fantasy-adjacent sword & sorcery settings (like DragonHeart or Dragonslayer), timeless fantasy that are arguably influenced by Medieval thinking (Tolkien, the Pre-Raphaelites), Medieval dream allegory (Piers Plowman), classic epics written during this period (Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Tale of Genji, Beowulf), and Fantasy/Medieval/Renaissance AUs of fandoms set in other time periods.

For all your "what counts as Medieval" needs, please don't hesitate to ask us if something qualifies on the Nominations post!

As I a sheep weere,
In habite as an heremite
Unholy of werkes,

Nominations will open on August 7th! See the tag set here!   Nominations close at 11:59pm EDT on August 14th.

Everyone will have 8 fandoms to nominate and 10 characters or relationships per fandom. Nominations and sign-ups will happen concurrently, so please be aware that offering or requesting "any" in a fandom can change if other people add new characters & ships.

SAME will use the Fandom and the Character tag slots for nominations. Characters and relationships can both be nominated in the Character slot. In the Fandom field, you can enter a canonical or non-canonical fandom. You may add a fandom if there's no fic for it yet on AO3.

If you want to nominate a relationship, please format it as:
Group: Character/Character (Fandom)  (for romantic or sexual relationships) or
Group: Character & Character (Fandom)  (for platonic relationships).

The punctuation / and & indicate what sort of relationship it is. Adding the fandom at the end of the nomination helps stop the tags from showing up in odd locations!

Larger groups are fine for this exchange. For example, a nomination of "Group: Character/Character & Character/Character (Fandom)" means you're asking for two sets of pairings who are doing something together or otherwise relate to each other. You can also nominate groups like so: "Knights and Ladies in King Arthur's Court (Arthurian)" if it makes sense for your canon!

If you want to nominate a character, just enter their name with the (Fandom) at the end. Original characters may be nominated under fandoms, but please make sure to describe how that character would exist in canon. For example, "Original Female Character (Merlin TV)" will not be approved, but "Original Female Page to Sir Gawain (Merlin TV)" will be.

Some fandom notes
:
Please nominate Medieval and Early Renaissance RPF under their respective centuries. If people are split across centuries, pick the most salient century to nominate them in. Julian of Norwich would go under 14th Century CE RPF. Cesare Borgia would go under 15th Century CE RPF.

Speaking of Cesare Borgia--certain characters will turn up in multiple fandoms. This is especially true of historical persons and Arthurian characters. Please be sure you're requesting the right character in the right fandom!

Arthurian romances can be nominated both as "Arthurian Mythology" and to a specific author/cycle. This will allow you to be as specific or general as you want to be. For example, if you want a specific character from the Lais of Marie de France but only as Marie de France wrote that character, please nominate that character under the Lais. If you want a specific character that occurs in the Lais, but you don't mind if the character has qualities that show up in later adaptations, you can nominate that character under "Arthurian Mythology".

"All Media Types" fandoms will be approved when I've had a chance to talk things over with the nominator, to see if there's a more specific version of the fandom that's in conflict. If you already know that All Media Types is the best way to nominate your fandom, consider dropping me a comment to clarify that so that it can be approved ASAP.

You may nominate trailers for films that have not been released yet due to COVID-19 nonsense.

Where you want to nominate a relationship between characters who appear in different fandoms, please nominate them under Crossover Fandom  and include the fandom for each. For example: Group: Margery Kempe (14th CE RPF)/Nimue (Cursed TV) .

You can also nominate characters and groups under Original Work . Please indicate the genders of the characters if that is important to you. If you need to, please ask the mod to add a more gender-specific version to the tag set during sign-ups if it becomes an issue!
