Nominations
The tagset is located here.
Nominations will run concurrently with signups, from August 1-7. You may nominate up to 8 fandoms, 10 characters or relationships per fandom.
Mods will approve nominations throughout the process. Nominations may be open early, and will be periodically reviewed prior to the official nomination dates. Once your nominations have been approved, you will no longer be able to edit them. Clarification questions will be posted to this community. Mods may reject nominations if questions are not answered or if nominations for original characters are not formatted correctly.
All characters and relationships will be put in the Relationship slot. Nominations should be disambiguated, using the canonical fandom name if possible, or just something that lets me know where the tag belongs.
Characters and ships should be nominated using this format:
+ Solo characters are nominated as Solo: Character Name (Fandom)
+ Platonic or & ships are nominated as Character A & Character B (Fandom)
+ Romantic or / ships are nominated as Character A/Character B (Fandom)
+ Original Characters, solo and in relationships, are nominated as: Solo: Original Character With Some Specific Detail (OW) or Original Character With Some Details/Original Character With Other Details (OW). Please add specific details or tropes to your Original Character requests to help your creator know what you're looking for! You can add gender tags to your ship or character nominations if you wish to specify gender for that tag.
Crossovers. There will be one "fandom" called Crossover Fandom. Crossover relationships can be nominated within it. Each individual character should be disambiguated (abbreviated canon names are fine).
Original Work. There will be one "fandom" called Original Work. Trope-style characters and relationships can be nominated for OW. You should specify gender within the nomination if you are interested in receiving a specific gender combination.
Fandoms. The following fandoms may be nominated for this exchange:
+ Works that were written between the years 400 CE and 1600 CE.
+ Works that are primarily set between the years 400CE and 1600CE.
+ Works that have a fantasy setting that corresponds roughly to this time period. I leave this up to your discretion to decide what fits!
+ RPF of people who lived between 400CE and 1600CE.
+ Any other fandom, with the understanding that any fic for that fandom will have to have a Medieval or Early Renaissance setting. How this setting is achieved in the work will be determined by Setting freeforms.
+ Crossovers of the above
+ Medieval or Early Renaissance Original work
RPF limitations: No non-famous 20th/21st-century people (relatives of actors, people not in the public eye, etc). No living people under 18. No 20th/21st-century Nazis, fascists, or white supremacists.
Nomination examples:
Medieval Monk Drawing Dirty Marginalia/Monk In Charge of the Scriptorium (OW)
(M/M) Devout Knight / Fallen Angel He Mistakenly Rescues (OW)
Solo: Margery Kempe (14th Century CE RPF)
Gawain & Mordred & Gareth (Arthurian)
Crossover nomination examples:
Lancelot (King Arthur 2004)/Piers Plowman (PP)
Gawain (The Green Knight 2020)/Lucifer (Lucifer TV)
OW nomination examples:
(F/F) Wealthy Aristocrat/Her Maid-in-Waiting (OW)
Male Dragon-Slayer & Male Dragon (OW)
Dragon-Slayer/Dragon (OW)
Court Poet Sailing With the King/Tentacle Monster Trying to Eat the Boat (OW)
Setting
Settings tags are used to tell us how you'd like your nominated fandom, characters, or relationship to fit into the Medieval time period. There are setting tags that cover a range of possibilities. You can mix and match the tags. For example, if you have a Medieval canon, but you'd like your characters to time travel, please feel free to use the time travel tags! If you'd like us to add one, please let us know and we will consider it!
Some of the current tags are:
Setting: Time Travel -- use this one if you don't care when the time travel happens to
Setting: Time Travel to (more specific time period) -- use these tags if you are interested in a more specific time destination
Setting: Dream or Dream Allegory -- use this tag if you only want your characters to mentally travel to a different time period.
Setting: Canon Medieval/Renaissance Setting -- use this tag if your canon/fandom already has a historical setting in the appropriate time period. Some fandoms might have a brief canon Medieval or Renaissance setting. If your canon has a brief canon foray into a different time period, you might need to make sure to refresh other fans' memory if it was especially brief!
Requests
The request section of your sign-up must include:
2 to 10 fandom requests with a minimum of 2 unique fandom requests. After that requirement is met, fandoms can be repeated.
1 to 10 characters or ships in each request in the Relationship slot
at least 1 Setting tag that describes how you would like the fandom to fit into the time period.
at least 1 Medium tag for the types of works you would like to receive.
optional: likes and prompts for each request
optional: indication of whether you're open to treats in other mediums (such as podfic, playlists, fanvids, etc)
optional: DNWs that don't conflict with the request or otherwise box your writer in
You may link to a letter, or requests from past exchanges, if you would like to give your writer more information about your likes. This is still a flash exchange in spirit, so keep that in mind!
--> If you're thinking of requesting "Any," remember that nominations and sign-ups are open concurrently and other characters/ships/freeforms may be nominated in that fandom after you sign up.
--> Prompts and freeforms may guide your writer, but please remember that optional details are optional and your writer may be inspired by something very different than you envisioned.
Do Not Wants
A Do Not Want is something that you do not wish to receive in your gift, whether it is something that would ruin the experience of a gift for you or something that you would simply strongly prefer to avoid. You can DNW anything within reason.
--> Your DNWs should not contradict your requests. For example, if you request a sister/brother ship, you cannot DNW incest to force your author into writing a Not Related AU.
--> While you may DNW specific eras/locations/types of settings that you are uninterested in receiving, you cannot DNW the premise of the exchange.
--> If your DNWs are vague, unenforceable, or box your writer in, a mod will contact you to change your DNWs. For example, a DNW of "nothing triggering" is too vague and a mod will require you to change it.
Offers
The offer section of your sign-up must include:
2 to 10 fandom offers with a minimum of 2 unique fandoms
1 to 10 characters/ships in each offer.
The goal with your offers is to try to make yourself matchable to another participant's requests.
If you are not matchable after initial matching is run, mods will contact you to add more offers. Get in contact with us ASAP! If you have not responded within 24 hours, or do not want to expand your offers, your signup will be deleted.
Writing, Arting & Other Creating
All works must be set between 400CE and 1600CE, or in an appropriate fantasy setting.
Works for fandoms or real people that have a canonical Medieval or Early Renaissance setting should pay attention to the recipient's interests indicated in their Setting Tags. If your recipient hasn't selected tags that would allow for AUs or time travel, you should set your work in the fandom or real person's canonical setting.
Works for fandoms or real people that are not canonically set during the Medieval or Early Renaissance should meet the setting requirement using appropriate setting tags. If your assignment does not have any setting tags, please feel free to contact a mod for further instruction. You can also Optional Details Are Optional, at your discretion!
Assignment-fulfilling stories must be at least 600 words long. Assignment-filling art must be at least a clean sketch on unlined paper. Assignment-filling maps must feature a minimum of three cities, landmarks, or other notable features. There are no set requirements for treats. Please check what kind of medium someone is open to before treating.
Defaulting
If you need to default, please do so early! Due to the compressed nature of this event, it is possible that later defaults may result in pinch hits that are due after the collection is revealed.
Pinch Hits
Treats
Treats are extra gifts created for signed up participants & pinch hitters. If you feel inspired to create a treat, we highly encourage you to do so! You do not need to be signed up for the exchange to post a treat. Treats also do not have to abide by the minimum word count. They do, however, need to respect your recipient's DNWs. To post a treat, head to the collection dashboard on AO3, click "Post to Collection," and fill out the form. Double-check the spelling of your recipient's AO3 username before you submit your treat!
If you are considering treating in other mediums, check your recip's prompts to see if they've indicated that they would like to receive podfics, playlists works in other media, etc.
Reveals
Works will be revealed August 31st. Authors will be revealed September 5.

Rules Overview
Each participant will produce:
+ a fic of at least 600 words, or a sketch on unlined paper, or one clean map with at least three notable features (can be landmarks, natural landscape features, or points of interest).
+ for one of their recipient's requested combinations of fandom + character/relationship
+ set in a requested setting freeform (or canon setting, if the canon is already set during the time period)
+ that does not contain the recipient's DNWs for that request
Pinch hits will be posted in
sameflash and promoted in the #flash-exchanges channel of the Exchanges After Dark Discord server.
Flash exchange expectations apply:
+ No one is guaranteed a gift. We will try our best to find pinch hitters for anyone whose original creator defaults. While we don't guarantee gifts, in the past round of SAME, every person who turned in their assignment received a gift as well.
+ Treating is encouraged! Treats do not have to meet the minimum word count, but MUST respect the recipient's DNWs.
+ The collection will open on time. If someone is missing a gift, they will be an immediate pinch hit, whose fic may post after author reveals.
+ Socks are welcome!**
+ Try to write something your recipient will like; leave kudos; and provide comments on your gift(s).
+ However, please bear in mind that Optional details are optional. Prompts and likes may guide your writer, but please understand that your writer may end up inspired by other scenarios. The only thing that your writer must respect are your DNWs.
+ Much like in medieval canons themselves, historical accuracy is not a requirement for gifts! We encourage any amount of research you might like to do into the time period for that extra-special historical flavor, but it is not expected that you or your author will do so. We're here to have fun, above all!
+ We reserve the right to ban participants for bad behavior (including, but not limited to, bad sock behavior).
